Where does Anise come from?

Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) is a member of the umbellifer family that produces aniseed seeds. The seeds of the anise plant are used to add flavour to meals. Star anise has a similar flavour to anise, but is from a different family. Anise is native to the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia. There are indications that the ancient Egyptians already used aniseed in 1500 BC.

Processing into aniseed powder

Aniseed is a herbaceous plant growing to a height of about 50 centimetres. The seeds are dried to reinforce their valuable components and then processed into aniseed powder. The powder is brown in colour and has a pleasant smell.

Usage of Aniseed Powder

Aniseed is a popular aromatic herb used in cooking and alcoholic drinks. Its unique flavour makes it a popular ingredient for many dishes and drinks. Anise is traditionally soaked in milk to make a fragrant aniseed milk. It is also used in gingerbread, aniseed bread, and various alcoholic drinks. Furthermore, aniseed goes well with fruit, nuts, pumpkin and carrot.

Super ingredient for vodka
I love uzo and raki. You can approximate that perfectly by dissolving aniseed powder in a bottle of vodka. The colour will be different, but it really tastes like raki.
