What is Celtic Sea Salt?

The salt that is called Celtic sea salt comes from France. To be precise, it comes from the region of Bretagne in France. There are different kinds of sea salt (Celtic sea salt). One is Sel gris which means grey salt. It is the coarser version of the two. The other is the white table salt. This is also called fleur de sel, which means flour of the salt. Both forms are rich in minerals and also have many traces. This gives Celtic sea salt its own distinctive taste. Besides salt, it is also sweet and bitter. A great combination, therefore. Celtic salt is low in sodium chloride. This makes it a delicious soft salt which actually feels very friendly in the mouth.

Why is Celtic Sea Salt called Celtic Sea Salt?

The Celtic empire has been very extensive. It has really been an extraordinarily large area until even the beginning of England. Even in Scotland and also in Ireland and Wales one can still trace the language back to Gallic. The French language in Bretagne is even very similar to the English language. Antiquity has been preserved in both countries. And the way in which the Celts extracted salt has also been preserved. And that is why there is still Celtic sea salt. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the Celtic sea salt is still widely imported.

How is Celtic Sea Salt extracted?

How is the extraction of salt normally done? One runs seawater into a basin and then closes it. The sun makes the water evaporate and then water remains. The power of the sun! The salt is then collected. The main thing is to get as much salt as possible. People are less interested in the quality. How did the Celts do it? The Celts created salt marshes. They cleverly let the sea water in and led it to a shallow pool. A process that takes about a week or two. Afterwards, the salt water is dried in the last pool and scooped up by hand. People still do it the same way today as they did about 2000 years ago. And that, of course, is admirable. The quality is also due to this excellent process.

Why is the extraction of salt in this way so special?

The shallow salt marshes have a type of clay that is not common. The Celts seem to have had knowledge of this already. They apparently already knew that the clay had a purifying effect on the salt water. Also, the seawater was much cleaner then than it is now with all its pollution. Even now, the purification process of the Celts still works great. And that is to be admired, of course. Maybe we should go back to nature.

The colour

So there is gray sea salt, but also white and one can even distinguish the colours by season. It is nice to see how the salt water and the clay react with each other and create the best kind of salt there is.
