Discover the magic of Matcha

When the Zen Buddhists introduced matcha tea to the Japanese in the 12th century, a unique Japanese tea ceremony was born. Matcha tea is still hugely popular in Japan and far beyond. The reason for this is that this green tea variety is grown in a unique way and therefore has special properties. In addition, matcha tea has an intense taste and therefore it distinguishes itself positively from other green teas.

The Camellia Sinensis

Matcha tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis, a tea plant mainly found in Japan. There, the tea fields of this plant are covered with shade sails by Japanese tea farmers about 4 weeks before harvesting. This is done to allow the tea plants to produce more chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives the leaves their dark green colour and at the same time ensures an increased content of amino acids. The intense and unique taste of matcha tea is also due to this special cultivation process. In addition, matcha tea leaves contain a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Matcha in powder form

In addition to the cultivation process, matcha tea also has a unique manufacturing process. For example, the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis are treated in a special way and ground into powder. After harvesting, the veins and stems are removed from the tea leaves. Next, the tea leaves are ground between stone to create matcha powder, giving it the light green colour for which it is known.

Chasen and Chakasu

Making your own matcha is also possible nowadays. For this you need several matcha accessories. In any case, the 'chasen' and the 'chakusu' should not be missing. These are respectively a bamboo brush and a bamboo spoon. It is also advisable to purchase a bamboo whisk and whisk holder. Of course, you will also need a typical Japanese tea dish to prepare the whole. On the internet, you will find lots of advice on how to use these matcha accessories and also how to make the best matcha tea and other products like matcha cakes and shakes yourself.
