The many types of chilli powder: From mild to wild

There are many chilli powders on the market, and they all have their own unique flavour and heat level. Some are mild, while others are incredibly spicy! If you want to add some heat to your dishes, chilli powder is the perfect ingredient. In this category, we will discuss the different types of chilli powder and how they are measured in terms of spiciness.

Different types of chilli

Chili powder is usually made from a mixture of different chilli peppers and spices.

Kids chilli powder is a popular type of chilli powder. It is made from ground red pepper with a Scoville value of around 3,000. That means this red pepper powder is quite mild in its spiciness. This powder is especially suitable for people who are just discovering the enriching world of spiciness in their food! If you want a chilli powder that is a little hot but not too overpowering, Kids chilli powder is a good choice.

We sell a collection of chilli powder that slowly increases in spiciness:

  1. Kids chilli powder is our red chilli powder with the least spiciness; suitable for the beginner.
  2. Our mild chilli powder has a SHU of 8,000 and is an excellent 2nd step in spiciness, matching the sharpness of Jalapeno peppers.
  3. Next in line is our medium chilli powder. With an SHU of 13,000, this one is already starting to get pretty spicy. In terms of spiciness, this chilli powder can be compared to Serrano pepper.
  4. The most commonly used chilli in chilli powder is Cayenne pepper powder. Cayenne peppers are very spicy, with a Scoville rating of 30,000-50,000. In terms of spiciness, you can substitute Cayenne pepper for Tabasco pepper! So for beginners, Cayenne pepper powder is quite spicy. But you get used to everything, so is spiciness. Those who often eat spicy food will at some point want to step up to even spicier.
  5. So for the seasoned fire-eaters, we have another really sharp chilli powder. This powder is made from chilli peppers that reach a SHU of 120,000! That's 3x sharper than cayenne powder.

What are these scoville values (SHU) I keep reading about?

The Scoville scale is a measure of the spiciness of chilli pepper powder. The scale ranges from 0 SHU (not spicy at all) to 16,000,000 SHU (extremely spicy)! Please read our Scoville blog, if you want to know more about this scoville scale.

Chilli powder or Cayenne pepper?

People sometimes ask whether they should buy chilli powder or cayenne powder. Essentially, both are chilli powders. The difference between chilli powder and cayenne pepper is that chilli powder can be a mix of 4 to as many as 20 different types of chilli, while cayenne pepper is a single type of chilli. Cayenne pepper powder is made from the Spanish red pepper named Cayenne. So a chilli powder may contain cayenne, but always together with other chilli spices. Cayenne pepper powder contains only cayenne pepper.
