Origin Galanga Root

Galanga root (Alpinia galanga) is a plant, related to ginger and also known as Laos. Laos is also sometimes called Thai ginger or galanga. It is a perennial plant from the tropics. Galanga root probably originated in Indonesia, but is currently cultivated in Indochina, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, the herb was certainly used in Europe as early as the 12th century: Hildegard of Bingen used it at that time as a medicine against 'heartache'.

Processing for Galanga Root Powder

After harvest, the good properties of the galanga root are concentrated and processed into galanga root powder. The powder has a beige to brown colour with a taste that has an aromatic spiciness.

Use Galanga Root Powder

Because of the taste that galanga root has, it is widely used in Asian dishes. In Thai dishes it is often used from curries to tom yum soup. Galanga root powder combines well with meat, but can also be used in stews, soups and other dishes instead of pepper.
