Portuguese spring water salt

This spring water salt is one of the best salts on earth. It has been extensively tested and comes from small salt farmers in Portugal, at the southern end of the 33 km long Porto de Mos Rio Maior fault zone. The salt is an ancient salt that was formed 200 million years ago by the drying up of a primordial sea. The salt is washed out of the rock by underground watercourses and flows to the surface as brine in springs. The brine is scraped from the surface with traditional wooden tools, sieved by hand and dried in the sun in large pyramids. Due to the amount of manual work involved, only 12 tonnes of salt are produced per year.

The discovery of this salt layer

In 1950, when the search for oil and natural gas began in the area, a 2000-metre thick salt layer was found. Prehistoric finds from the area indicate that the salt was already being extracted well before Roman times. This spring salt is unique in Europe and is considered the best salt in Portugal.

Very pure salt

Spring salt is still extracted by hand today; other methods do not yield purer and higher quality salt. Only with this careful extraction method does the salt retain its pure crystalline structure. The colour is white and the taste is naturally salty.

Versatile salt for the kitchen.

It can be used in soups, stews, on meat and fish. It can also be used as a mouthwash.
