All about liquid Stevia extracts

What is Stevia?

Stevia is a plant, the sweetener of the plant is used as a sweetener in numerous products. The best known are of course the Stevia 'sweeteners' that you put in your coffee to replace a teaspoon of sugar or whole sugar cube. Stevia is completely natural and can be added to various foods - including beverages, baked goods, and dishes.

Where does Stevia grow?

Stevia is the reference to the plant 'Stevia Rebaudiana'. This plant is not sweet as a whole, only some parts of it. The Stevia is a leafy plant, which originally grows in South America. Especially in Paraguay and Brazil, you can find high concentrations of Stevia plants. In these countries, the use of Stevia as a sweetener for tea and medicine has been known since ancient times.

Winning Stevia

Stevia is extracted from the leaves of the plant. These are first ground and then soaked in hot water. The resulting mash is purified and dried after purification.

The main sweeteners found in the Stevia plant are stevioside and rebaudioside. These two natural sweeteners are naturally hundreds of times sweeter than "regular" sugar. Stevioside and rebaudioside belong collectively to the group of steviol glycosides.

Using Liquid Stevia

Stevia is also available as a liquid sweetener. Liquid Stevia is ideal for use in smoothies and cocktails, but can also be stirred into yogurt (breakfast) for example. Baking with Stevia is also an option: two or three Stevia drops are already equal to a whole teaspoon of ordinary sugar. The advantage of Stevia is that it contains no calories and has no effect on blood levels.

A Glycemic Index of 0

Stevia liquid is not only suitable for diabetics, but also for people who have Candida or PKU (phenylketonuria). Why. The glycemic index of Stevia (the GI) equals zero. The liquid Stevia extract is natural, free of traditional sugars and calories.

Use of Steviol glycoside

Steviol glycoside has been used for all liquid product forms that you will encounter in the Naturaplaza assortment. This sweetener is extracted in South and Central America. Steviol glycoside is sweeter than sugar so you need much less compared to sugar.

Recipes with Stevia extract

You can use Stevia drops in tea and coffee, but also in the mixtures of various baked goods and dishes. Pure Stevia can be as much as 150 times sweeter than sugar: you, therefore, need much less of it, a few Stevia drops are enough for a fine sweet taste.

Buy Pure Stevia

Pure Stevia can be added to cottage cheese, to yogurt and gives a unique twist to your fresh smoothie. You can also use Stevia drops to make healthy, calorie- and sugar-free sodas. You can bake with Stevia at temperatures as high as 200 degrees Celsius. Please note that because Stevia is so powerful, you should never just add whole shoots.

Liquid Stevia: the ultimate sugar substitute

Liquid Stevia can be used for ice cream and cakes, among other things. It is a tasty sugar substitute that is free from carbohydrates and sugar. The sweet treat does not affect your blood sugar levels. Are you on a diet? Then Stevia is also ideal for you: you can already strip off the calories from excessive sugar. That adds up!

No tooth decay

Cavities: it's a well-known problem, especially with (young) children. Cavities keep dentists off the streets. 'Talking won't fill a hole' they sometimes say, so we are concise with our message: with Stevia, tooth decay is a thing of the past.

Did you know that the Europeans of the Middle Ages suffered far less from dental disease than modern Europeans? That's because, before Columbus' voyages of discovery, sugar was not or hardly to be found here.

How much Stevia is safe to use?

Stevia liquid is produced in Europe. The sweetener is completely safe and suitable for all kinds of applications. Yet, as with almost everything, you should not ingest too much of it.

Of the active ingredient Steviol glycosides you shouldn't take more than 4 milligrams per kilo of body weight. If you weigh 60 kilograms, that's a maximum of 240 milligrams per day. If you use Stevia limited, it is also safe during pregnancy and lactation.

Are there any disadvantages associated with Stevia?

The Taste of Stevia is not as explosive as that of sugar. In practice, Stevia sweetener will therefore not make a product immediately sweet, this is more gradual. Stevia also has a very long aftertaste, which some people find unpleasant (a kind of 'metallic'). Stevia has a very intense, sharp taste: not everyone likes the taste of Stevia.

What to watch out for

Stevia is healthier than sugar, but the active ingredient can have an effect on the use of certain medications. Stevia is a good alternative for Diabetics, but the substance can have an impact on certain forms of Diabetes medications. Also on medications for hypertension (so-called blood pressure reducers) and Lithium are not always compatible with Stevia.

Stevia doesn't make one instantly healthy

Stevia is relatively healthy (at least not unhealthy), but that does not mean that all products containing Stevia are healthy. Manufacturers would like to hitch a ride on the good name that Stevia has by using the Stevia label to put the consumer on the wrong foot.

A product with Stevia extract can still be unhealthy. You have to find out if Stevia is the only sweetener used and if there is not a combination with sugars.
