History of Kala Namak Salt Chunks

Kala Namak, also known as black salt, is a salt granulate originating from Pakistan. This salt is naturally pure and unrefined volcanic mineral salt and is processed according to ancient traditions. The salt is characterized by a high content of water sulfide and iron.

Traditionally, this salt was extracted from mines in Pakistan. The raw material must be heated in a stove for 24 hours while it was in a sealed ceramic container along with charcoal. During these 24 hours, the sodium sulfate is converted to hydrogen sulfide and sodium sulfide, this gives Kala Namak a dark color. After heating, it was cooled, stored and aged.
